The UK visa application form on Gov.uk is long, confusing, and unforgiving. One wrong checkbox can lead to a refusal or a 10-year ban. This step-by-step guide walks you through the entire process, from getting your CAS to picking up your BRP.

Dreading the paperwork?

Let Us Fill the Form For You →

Step 1: Secure Your CAS

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is your "golden ticket". You cannot apply without it. Your university will send this via email once you have:

  • Accepted your unconditional offer.
  • Paid your tuition deposit (usually £3,000 - £5,000).
  • Passed pre-CAS checks (financial and academic verification).

Check the CAS carefully! Ensure your name, passport number, and course fees paid are 100% correct. If there is an error, ask the uni to fix it before you apply.

Step 2: Gather Your Documents

Before you open the application form, have these ready:

  • Passport: Valid for the duration of your stay (ideally).
  • Financial Evidence: Bank statements showing funds held for 28 days.
  • TB Test Certificate: From an approved clinic.
  • ATAS Certificate: (Only for certain science/engineering courses).
  • Consent Letter: If using parents' funds or if you are under 18.

Step 3: Fill the Online Application

Go to the official Gov.uk website. You will answer questions about:

  • Your travel history (last 10 years).
  • Your parents' details.
  • Your course and sponsor (using info from the CAS).

Critical: Be honest about previous visa refusals for any country. They share data. Hiding a refusal is "deception" and leads to a ban.

Step 4: Pay the Fees

You will be redirected to pay:

  1. Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): Gives you access to the NHS.
  2. Visa Application Fee: Submits your application.

Once fees are paid, your application is "submitted".

Step 5: Biometrics & Document Upload

You will be directed to the VFS Global or TLSContact website.

  • Upload Documents: Scan your documents clearly. Do not upload blurry photos.
  • Book Appointment: Choose a slot to give fingerprints and photo.

Step 6: The Wait & Collection

After your appointment, standard processing takes ~15 working days. You will receive an email to collect your passport. If successful, you get a 90-day entry vignette (sticker) in your passport.

The form is tricky. Don't risk a silly mistake.

FAQ

What is a BRP?

The Biometric Residence Permit is your ID card in the UK. You pick it up from a Post Office or your university within 10 days of arriving. Note: UK is moving to digital eVisas in 2025, so physical BRPs are being phased out.
