The Graduate Route (often called the PSW or Post-Study Work visa) is the crown jewel of the UK education system. It allows international students to stay in the UK for 2 years (or 3 years for PhDs) after graduating to work in any job, at any salary level. No sponsor required. This guide explains how to secure it.
Planning your career in the UK?
Apply for Study Visa First →1. Who is Eligible?
You can apply if:
- You are currently in the UK.
- You hold a valid Student Visa.
- You have successfully completed your eligible course (Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD).
- Your university has notified the Home Office of your completion.
Crucial: Do not leave the UK / travel after your course ends but before you apply for the Graduate Route. If you leave, you might lose eligibility.
2. Key Benefits vs Skilled Worker Visa
Why choose Graduate Route over Skilled Worker?
- Flexibility: You can work as a freelancer, contractor, or in a part-time job. Skilled Worker requires a specific job role.
- No Minimum Salary: You don't need to earn £38,700. You can start in an internship or junior role.
- No Sponsor Cost: Your employer doesn't need to pay sponsorship fees, making you easier to hire.
3. Costs (2025)
- Application Fee: £822
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year (Total £2,070 for 2 years).
Total cost is roughly £2,892. You must pay this upfront.
4. Does it count towards ILR (Settlement)?
No. The 2 years on the Graduate Route do NOT count towards the 5-year route to Indefinite Leave to Remain. However, they DO count towards the 10-year "Long Residence" route.
Strategy: Use the Graduate Route to find a good employer. Then, switch to the Skilled Worker Visa once you have proven yourself. The Skilled Worker visa DOES count towards the 5-year settlement.
